Three Bridges and Mamluk Khan (Inn)
"Jeser el-Majama"
The Roman Bridge, "the Meeting Bridge" - named after the junction of the Jordan and Yarmouk Rivers, nearby. This is the oldest bridge documented from the crusaders journey. It has undergone many changes throughout its existence.
The Railway Bridge
Built in 1904 for the Haifa - Damascus Route ("Valley Train" Route).
One of the largest bridges of its time.
The Concrete Bridge
Built in 1925 with the paving of the Beit She'an - Tiberias roadway. This bridge served the Jewish inhabitants of Naharayim in order to come home to the Land of Israel. The road divided here heading northwards towards Jordan and Iraq.
These three bridges connected the Eastern and Western banks of the Jordan River and played an important role for travelers from Egypt to Syria; the ancient "Via Maris" pathway.
The three bridges were all bombed by Israeli forces during the War of Independence to halt the infiltrating Iraqi army. Emil Brigg, an explosives expert in the Engineering Department of the Golani Brigade, oversaw the bombing of the bridges. With the declaration of Independence, during the night between the 14th and 15th of May, 1948, Emil Brigg and 2 members from Kibbutz Gesher went out to explode the bridges after hearing that the people in Naharayim were being held hostage and could not return to Israel. Exploding the bridges was meant to prevent Iraqi forces from crossing the River and entering the country.
